Wow, what a session Aaron Danks delivered a couple of weeks ago. It produced high tempo football with superb quality play by The Owls Academy players. A truly memorable coaching workshop that we are fortunate to have attended, on the concept of attacking overloads. Naturally it involved lots of purposeful possession, creating scoring opportunities and taking these chances. Aaron used the following terms when out of/in possession ‘regain or reshape’ and ‘quick or careful’. He also explained the National teams 5 point philosophy when attacking/trying to score: Penetration, Crossing & Finishing, Combinations, Dribbling/Individual Play and Shots From Distance. Hopefully, Aaron will return and I’m sure he will attract many more coaches after such a wonderfully delivered coaching session.
Up next is a coach from one of our ‘host clubs’ and he makes his debut presenting a coaching workshop on our behalf. It gives me great pleasure to welcome Shamus ‘Shay’ Beaglehole. Shay is an UEFA A License & Advanced Youth Module Coach with Sheffield Wednesday Academy. Shay holds the vital and prominent position of being The Owls Foundation Phase Manager, ensuring their players between 5-11 are given the best start that The Owls Academy offers. These fortunate players development is essential, so that moving through the older age groups they are well equipped to deal with more challenging coaching during their progressive journey. Shay and his coaches lay the ‘bedrock’ which is built on season after season.
Shay will deliver the following coaching workshop: ‘Building From The Back’ in a 7v7 (Foundation Phase Specific)
Successfully playing out from the back is an important concept in youth training and playing football, as it teaches players how to play under pressure. Nonetheless playing out from the back is a courageous philosophy which requires (and creates) confident players but it also requires time and patience to develop as mistakes/miscues will occur and these should be acceptable in youth football. Keeping the practices as simple and game related as possible will help us teach the principles. In general it outlays the foundation of a dominant possession style of football and in the long-term it is more promising and effective than playing long balls. COME ALONG AND JOIN US WATCH A BESPOKE SESSION FOR THE YOUNGER, FOUNDATION, AGE GROUP(S).This session can also be transferred to coach U12 – U16 players. Pep Guardiola has managed to coach Manchester City to use this playing philosophy – there’s hope for us all, yet!!!!
WHEN: Wednesday 2nd October 2019 – 7pm until 8.30pm
WHERE: Sheffield Wednesday Academy/Training Ground Facility, Middlewood Road Sheffield S6 1TF
WHO: Shamus ‘Shay’ Beaglehole – Sheffield Wednesday Foundation Phase Manager
